If you are curious how and why the Pink Lakes are so pink, blame the red-colored algae, plankton and shrimp that thrive on the salty environment near the plant.
Years ago, you could swim in the water. However, due to the contamination from lotions to the salt production it is no longer allowed. You are escorted with a guide the entire time. Currently (as of Dec 2019), you may take photos only with camera phones due to an incident with a photographer in 2019 who did not properly request a permit for professional photography.
