3 Ways to Be an Overcomer in Life (and insights from Overcomer Movie)

Updated: Oct 16, 2019

In the last several years, many teachings and trainings have transformed my life. These transformation trainings and events have helped me be an overcomer in many ways in life. Years ago, I would have never imagined that a movie would help me be an overcomer and contribute to my transformation story.

I went and saw The Overcomer Movie the first day it released in Atlanta, GA. From the first time I saw the preview of the Overcomer Movie, I knew I wanted (and needed to go see it right away). I prayed and set an intention of Freedom before going to see the movie. Freedom is my word for 2019 as well. As a result, many (if not all) of my choices have been directed by this word.

Some of you may have seen the movie War Room The same creators of War Room, Alex and Stephen Kendrick, created this movie. I have legit seen War Room over 15 times. The movie War Room and the book, Fervent by Priscilla Shirer (also in both movies), have blessed me in many ways.

I want you to know that in no way, shape, or form is the post sponsored or paid for. My movie ticket was also my own purchase. I am deeply passionate about sharing knowledge and anything that resonates with me that may help you as well.

That is why I am sharing about this movie and 3 Ways to Be an Overcomer in Life (and insights from Overcomer movie.

3 Ways to Be an Overcomer in Life

(and Insights into Overcomer Movie)

I'm sharing 3 ways to be an overcomer in life. You will learn 3 ways that will help you repeatedly overcome different things in your life. I am no stranger to overcoming challenges and tragedies in life. My family immigrated from Europe to the United States when I was two years old.

We lived in a refuge camp when I was less than a year old. We moved from Europe to two states. Like many of us, I have walked through challenges in childhood. I walked through an abusive relationship in my late teens. I walked through undergraduate, graduate school, and over 7+ industries.

I overcame losing over 55+ lbs after years of trying. I transformed my passion and purpose with our Creator over the last 5+ years and continue to. I am overcoming generational challenges in wealth towards freedom and legacy. One of my best friends, Janelle passed away from cancer in 2013.

These are some highlights of ways I am an overcomer in life so you know I am here with you.

Like many of us, I have been punched in the face and gut by life. But God. The 3 Ways I am sharing to be an overcomer come from the movie and years of experience and insight.

After I saw the movie, I went to the Chattahoochee River here in Atlanta and journaled for 3+ hours. I recommend when you go see the movie, you pray for what is on your heart and spend time alone after. It will help you in countless ways to transform and overcome in your mind and life.

Before you go further, ask yourself what would you love to overcome the most? Is it really the issue? What is your struggle or hardship teaching you about yourself? Often times, our most painful seasons are tied to our greatest purpose.

1. Fixing Your Identity

The last several years, I have shifted my identity to the internal and the eternal. Years ago, I would focus my identity mainly on the external. There were elements of focusing on internal and eternal. However, overwhelmingly I focused on the external. This meant how did things look on the outside.

I tied my identity to appearance, opinions and accomplishments. This led to tying identity to status, recognition and money. My foundation had cracks in it. How do I know? The minute any of these things didn't happen or fill me, I judged myself. I didn't acknowledge myself before as a priceless human being. By doing so, I discounted my value and others.

In comparison, now that my identity increasingly grows in Christ, these things are bonuses. They are not my be all end all. They do not have my heart. Yes, it is great to learn and get recognized. However, when our identity is wrapped up in how many likes, status or a promotion, it may lead to depression and anxiety easily when these things don't happen on our timing.

The movie does an incredible job on highlighting different challenges in identity. These includes characters in the movie initially tying their identity to their profession, external rewards and their family. There are many powerful testimonies in the movie with what we allow to define us with each and every character.

Here is a sneak peek of the Overcomer movie.

This song, Enough, by Koryn Hawthorne from the Overcomer movie Soundtrack is incredible.I listen to it numerous times a week now.

Take a good honest look at where you are placing your identity.

Who or what is influencing your vision?

At any point in time, you may choose what you allow to define you.

You are limitless. You are resilient. You are priceless.

2. Holding Your Power

Holding your power has to do with what you are allowing to steal your peace and your joy. You may see how this ties to identity as well. Some examples from my journey include how I used to allow other's opinions to steal my joy. Another example includes that I used to seek validation from others on my own God Given dreams.

Holding your power involves digging deep into how do you allow your peace to be stolen? What is stealing your joy? Happiness may be tied to something external happening which is fleeting or temporary. In comparison, when you choose to focus on joy (Phil 4:8) and peace, it may amaze you how calm you are in the midst of circumstances that are crazy.

As I look back, I realize how years ago I allowed so many insignificant things or situations to steal my peace and joy. In comparison, now I am amazed at how I am blessed by peace that surpasses understanding constantly. Phil 4:7.

I love how in the movie Ephesians 1 and 2 are introduced and what our Creator says about us. For example, I am chosen, I am forgiven, I am redeemed. The scene where Hannah gives an impromptu monologue after she gives her life to Christ in front of a classroom of students is powerful and mind blowing. As I watched the movie, I thought to myself, I wish there were movies like this when I was in school.

3. Alignment to Who You Are

Alignment to who you are and your purpose is powerful. Think about what do you love, what have you overcome, and how may you serve others. In my case, this involved going from instability in health, wealth, and business due to misalignment. It is no wonder I was 55+ pounds heavier, career, and money in chaos.

I repeatedly made choices until 5+ years ago based on the external in so many areas of life. This included my career e.g. 7+ industries. The first time in my life I truly went internally and prayed about a promotion, I said no. I shocked myself in 2011. The promotion would have led to almost double in my salary. Yet, I knew it was not aligned to my spirit.

At the same time, I believe nothing is ever wasted. In addition, each and every experience personally and professionally has helped me get here. As I started to shift to create a life and business I love, there were and are many foundation areas I get to address. Areas that I previously didn't allow love in that needed or need healing. The more we fill our cup and allow our Creator to, we show up differently.

We show up knowing not only our identity and where it comes from, but our worth. Because you know what truly defines you and you are grounded in the internal and eternal, you don't let the external define you.

The Overcomer movie does an amazing job showing this in people's stories and testimonies in a powerful way. I highly recommend you go see it. I will be buying it as soon as it comes out as well.
