3 Nutrients Your Body Needs: Proteins, Carbs + Fats.

Updated: Sep 13, 2019

No matter what age you are, you can learn what nutrients your body needs. I knew somewhat what nutrients my body needed before I was 35, but I didn't apply it. Applied knowledge is powerful and generates results. For some reason, we often have the knowledge but fail to apply it.

I didn't eat healthy consistently until five years ago. It took me 35+ years to learn and practice how to get healthy. So, no matter how young or old you are it is never too early or too late to start. For years, I would practice eating healthy some of the time. I finally learned to get the results I wanted and to keep them, it was important to take care of my body all the time.

Since losing over 55 lbs, five years ago (and keeping them off) with the help of transforming habits, including Herbalife #1 Global Nutrition, and competing, my thinking has completely transformed. I haven't drank any alcohol for 5+ years (and have zero desire to).

I used to love Tiramisu, yet found it too sweet 3+ years ago. I haven't touched any sweets for 3+ years I am living proof it is possible to transform step by step in your health and life. Imagine how energetic you could feel with shifting habits in your health to start.

*Disclaimer: avg person who uses Herbalife Nutrition loses .5 to 1 lb a week with healthy active lifestyle.

3 Nutrients Your Body Needs

When I first started losing weight in 2013, I started learning and applying the nutrients my body needs on a daily basis.

I kept it simple by changing and replacing habits each month. In the first two months of my lifestyle transformation, I realized I was missing protein in my daily nutrition.

Protein

I started to adjust this step by step with food and Herbalife Global Nutrition shakes and snacks.

Many people wonder why protein is important for our bodies. I am so glad you asked. I love to help you shift your habits.

Protein is important for several reasons:

  • Needed 4-6 times daily to stay full

  • Minimum ½ of body weight needed.

  • Energy if carbohydrates unavailable.

  • Make enzymes, hormones, chemicals.

  • Building for bones, muscles, cartilage, blood.

  • Build and repair tissues.

  • Immune function.

  • Can not be stored.

It is easy to see why missing protein daily can impact your body in many ways. Protein isn't the only nutrient that is important for your body on a daily basis.

Carbohydrates

Isn't it crazy how we jump in ready to change years worth of habits all at once. Then we wonder why it is so hard. Worse yet, when it gets to be too much, we quit. Then the next event or New Year comes along we go at it full force, and hit the brick wall of no results again.

That's why it's so important to shift habits step by step. For years, I tried to lose weight and keep it off. The only time it finally worked was when I chose to focus on 1-2 things each month consistently. More importantly, I made it simpler by incorporating tools like Herbalife Global Nutrition, meal bags, and meal prep services.

I constantly asked myself what will set me and others up for success. I still do this all the time.

Carbohydrates are important for several reasons:

  • Needed for energy 2-3 times daily.

  • Especially important to include before and after workouts.

  • Our body’s main source of fuel.

  • Needed for the central nervous system, the kidneys, the brain, the muscles, the heart

  • Consume minimum 3+ oz. each time.

  • Can be stored in the muscles and liver.

  • Important to waste elimination

Some of my favorite carbohydrates include sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and brown rice. You can see how leaving carbohydrates out of your daily lifestyle may impact the functioning of your body in different ways. One horrible habit I had years ago was not eating anything before and after my workouts. When we do this, our bodies are forced to draw from our existing muscle to get energy which increases our body fat. Bottom line - completely negating the purpose of a workout.

I tell people all the time - it's better to spend your workout time in the beginning setting yourself up with a meal prepping habit. It literally is 80% nutrition and 20% fitness.

The fuel we have in our bodies are essential to functioning. This is akin to hopping in the car and driving down the road with no destination and no idea how much gas is left.

Essential Fats

Last, but not least are essential fats. There are many essential fats I love. These include olive oil, avocados, and almond butter to name a few.

Fats are important for several reasons:

  • Desired by our bodies -3 times daily.

  • Help normal growth and development

  • Energy (most concentrated source)

  • Absorbing certain vitamins ( like vitamins A, D, E, K, and carotenoids)

  • Providing cushioning for the organs.

  • Maintaining cell membranes.

  • Providing taste, consistency, and stability to foods.

Proteins, Carbohydrates, and Essential Fats:

3 Nutrients Your Body Needs

Your body needs these 3 essential nutrients. Think about how often you eat protein and carbohydrates to start. Even if you start with improving them 1-3 times a day, you will see transformation results.

I remember how I started with simply adding 2 shakes a day and a snack, and lost 15 lbs my first month shifting habits. I realized I wasn't eating enough and needed more protein.

Imagine how having more energy would help you and your family.

What nutrient could you add more often? How could you shift your habits?
